The latest trend in weight loss
2 min read

FOR AS long as we can remember, there has always been a trending “magic pill” for weight loss. In the past, we’ve seen methods like Duromine, fad diets, and more invasive options like stomach surgery, where a sleeve or part of the stomach is removed. Currently, it’s Ozempic grabbing the spotlight.

Ozempic, an injectable medication, is primarily prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes by helping regulate blood sugar levels. It also promotes weight loss, which is beneficial for diabetes patients.
However, this secondary effect has led to its off-label use for weight loss by those who do not have diabetes.

This is written with no shame or judgement, but genuine concern about how many people are now using this drug for weight loss without the necessary knowledge to maintain good health. I 100 percent agree – being overweight carries significant issues: heart disease, depression, and a higher risk of cancer.

It’s crucial to understand that weight management is a lifetime commitment.

While fad diets often lead to temporary weight loss followed by weight gain, learning how to eat well and nourish your body can help achieve sustainable health.

Regular movement improves cardiovascular, muscular, and mental health. Developing these habits provides strategies to return to, rather than relying on appetite loss caused by medications.

Moreover, Ozempic comes with a black box warning for a high risk of thyroid cancer observed in animal studies.

This potential side effect raises concerns about the drug’s long-term safety.

One of the significant risks associated with Ozempic use is muscle loss, often overlooked.

Maintaining muscle mass is crucial as we age, supporting health, mobility, and metabolism. Losing muscle might contribute to prioritising being skinny over being healthy.

If you choose to use Ozempic, consider these important points:

Get Educated: Understand how Ozempic works and its potential side effects. Long-term side effects include gastrointestinal issues and an increased risk of thyroid cancer. Always consult healthcare professionals and seek advice from a nutritionist.

Protein Intake: Adequate protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, especially when losing weight.

Balanced Lifestyle: Continue to emphasise a balanced lifestyle. Regular physical activity and a nutritious diet should remain central to your weight loss journey.

Mental Health: Focus on mental well-being. The pressure to conform to weight loss trends can impact mental health. Ensuring a positive body image and self-esteem is just as important.

Remember, health isn’t just about the number on the scale. It’s about overall well-being and longevity. My concern stems from care and the desire to see everyone achieve their health goals in a safe and sustainable manner.
