Crime Stoppers empower locals to combat crime

CRIME Stoppers Queensland, a registered charity and volunteer-driven community organisation, continues to make significant strides in the fight against crime.

It provides Queenslanders with a trusted, anonymous platform to report suspicious activity and unsolved crimes.

Established in 1989, Crime Stoppers Queensland is a key member of the national Crime Stoppers Australia network, which includes eight organisations across every Australian state and territory.

With a clear vision of fostering a safer community, Crime Stoppers works with police, media, and the public to gather information that supports crime solving and prevention.

The organisation encourages people to share what they know, not who they are, ensuring complete anonymity.

Calls to the hotline (1800 333 000) are not recorded, protecting individuals’ identities.

Crime Stoppers Queensland is renowned for its community engagement, with over 300 volunteers across 20 committees—the only state with such extensive representation.

The organisation actively encourages participation.

Crime Stoppers addresses cross-border issues such as drug manufacturing, illegal firearms, and fugitives.

Its role has expanded globally, with other countries adopting similar systems, recognising their effectiveness.

Crime Stoppers began in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a tragic robbery.

A service station attendant was fatally shot, but public tips led to arrests.

This inspired the global Crime Stoppers movement, providing a safe way for communities to share information.

Locally, Crime Stoppers Queensland runs campaigns like “Dob in a Dealer,” “Gun Amnesty,” and initiatives focused on rural crime, wildlife crime, and children’s safety.

It also works with the Fraser Coast Regional Council (FCRC) to install signage around schools and busy areas in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

Fundraising supports this work, including Bunnings sausage sizzles, donations, and information displays at shopping centres and markets.

These efforts fund free public materials promoting safety and crime prevention.

Crime Stoppers Queensland offers a welcoming space for volunteers from all backgrounds.

Volunteers, such as a local radio announcer and public speaker, bring expertise on scams, cyber safety, and security.

Together, we can make Queensland safer.
