BIRDSONG and feathers filled the air in Maryborough as the Hervey Bay Bird Club hosted its biggest event yet — the 10th Annual Bird Expo and Sale — attracting hundreds of enthusiasts and breeders from across Queensland and beyond.
An estimated 500 visitors passed through the doors, greeted by over 1,000 birds on display and a bustling market of avian accessories.
From nesting boxes and bird toys to seed mixes and health supplements, the Expo offered a paradise for pet bird owners and serious breeders alike.
“This year’s vendor numbers by far is the largest in our ten years,” organisers said, proudly noting the milestone.
The event attracted ornamental bird breeders from across Queensland and as far as Northern NSW, with many making the most of the opportunity to exchange knowledge, connect with fellow breeders, and introduce new bloodlines into their aviaries.
“This is an opportunity for breeders to gain new bloodlines and discuss new developments in the bird world including conservation,” organisers said.
Conservation was a key talking point, with many attendees focused on the important role breeders play in protecting endangered species.
The Golden-shouldered Parrot — a native Queensland bird whose wild habitat continues to shrink — is one such example thriving in captivity thanks to dedicated breeders.
But it wasn’t just about the birds — the event brought a welcome boost to the Fraser Coast economy.
Hundreds of visitors stayed in the region for several days, booking local accommodation and enjoying the area’s hospitality.
“Our club uses the Expo as an opportunity to raise funds and a substantial proportion of this is saved and donated to local organisations,” organisers added.
This year, the club donated $1,000 to the Fraser Coasters Wheelchair Basketball Club and continues to maintain aviaries at two local aged care facilities.
“This is the largest bird Expo this year in Qld and hopefully will continue to be a draw card to the region,” the club said.
The Hervey Bay Bird Club also maintains a permanent presence at the Koala Markets every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month.
