A UNIQUE local attraction combining model railways, engineering, and community connection continues to delight visitors of all ages in Hervey Bay.
M&K Wide Bay Electronics & Model Railways was originally established as an electronics and engineering business in 1985.
The venture expanded in 1997 with the opening of a railway-themed tourist attraction.
Officially launched by then-Mayor Fred Kelinschmidt, it has since become a much-loved destination for locals and tourists from across Queensland and beyond.
The attraction features a fully operational indoor electric model railway with a European-themed layout, a short film, and a fun “search and find” activity.
The air-conditioned venue provides a comfortable setting year-round, with complimentary morning and afternoon teas available for visitors — bookings are essential.
A dedicated party room caters to children’s birthday parties, school excursions, and group bookings.
Educational sessions include demonstrations on steam engine mechanics and the history of rail transport.
The outdoor miniature village also operates during summer evenings, offering a magical experience for families.
Every Friday from 9am to 12pm, the centre hosts complimentary morning teas for visitors from nearby regions such as Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg, and the Sunshine Coast.
These mornings have become a cherished community tradition, attracting guests with a wide range of skills and stories.
The railway attraction is supported by the original electronics and engineering business, which continues to play a key role in local infrastructure, including water treatment plants and pump stations for Hervey Bay City Council and Wide Bay Water.
The team also provides sales, service, and installations for two-way radios, industrial motors, and telecommunications systems.
With a long-standing history of employing and training local apprentices, the business also promotes Hervey Bay at expos in Bundaberg and Brisbane, helping to boost regional tourism.
“We’re incredibly grateful to all our customers and supporters over the years,” said the owners, Mal and Karin.
“It’s a joy to share our passion with new generations while contributing to the local community.”
