Wide Bay Hospitals welcome new doctors

WIDE Bay Hospital and Health Service is preparing to welcome a record intake of first-year graduate doctors, marking a significant milestone in strengthening regional health care.

This surge in new medical staff reflects ongoing efforts to expand the state’s health workforce and ensure access to high-quality care for communities across the Wide Bay region.

The arrival of these graduate doctors comes as Queensland works toward the goal of adding 46,000 health staff by 2032 to meet rising demand for medical services.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service, like other regional facilities, will directly benefit from this increase, improving patient access to emergency medicine, cardiology, orthopaedics, anaesthetics, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, intensive care, mental health, general medicine, and surgical services.

Regional hospitals play a critical role in providing frontline care, and the deployment of graduate doctors to Wide Bay ensures that rural and regional communities have greater access to clinical expertise.

Many new graduates will gain experience across different rotations, with some undertaking placements in rural and remote settings, equipping them with the skills to respond to the diverse medical needs of regional populations.

In addition, the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway continues to support the development of doctors committed to rural medicine.

Several graduates joining Wide Bay have already chosen specialist pathways through the program, ensuring high-quality care for residents and strengthening the long-term capacity of regional health services.

This record intake demonstrates the state’s commitment to revitalising the health workforce after a period of decline, investing in the future of regional hospitals, and improving patient outcomes.

By bringing energetic and highly trained new doctors into Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service, Queensland Health is taking a major step toward delivering accessible, world-class healthcare across all communities, no matter their location.

The new cohort of doctors represents not only the next generation of medical professionals but also a critical reinforcement of regional health services, ensuring
that Wide Bay residents can access timely, skilled, and compassionate care within their local hospital network.
