Time for the annual service?

When was the last time your body had a service?  Many of us often forget to have a check-up with your General Practitioner (GP).  Some may rely on the motto “if it ain’t broke, why fix it?”.

Just like seeing your optometrist for an eye check, or seeing your dentist for that dental check-up, touching base with your GP as a preventative activity is a vital at maintaining your overall health. These routine visits are an opportunity to address any health concerns, receive preventive care, and to develop a plan.

We will briefly go through the process of a check-up.

Medical History

Your GP will start by discussing your medical history. They'll ask about any ongoing or recent health issues, medications you're taking, and any family history of diseases. This information helps with risk stratification and understanding your specific health needs.

Examination

An examination will measure your vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, weight and height. These measurements provide insights into your overall health.  A focussed physical examination such as a heart exam may be performed depending on any symptoms you disclose.

Screening Tests

Depending on your age, gender, and risk factors, your GP may recommend specific screening tests, such as blood tests, cholesterol checks, or cancer screenings. These tests are designed to catch potential health issues early when they are most treatable.

Immunisations

Your GP will review your vaccination status and, if necessary, recommend and administer vaccines to protect you from vaccine preventable diseases including tetanus, pertussis, influenza, pneumococcal, varicella zoster and others

Health Counselling

GPs offer health guidance on lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, and stress management. They can also provide information on smoking cessation, alcohol use, and other health-related concerns.

Follow-Up

If any health issues are identified or tests arranged, your GP will discuss treatment options and the need for follow-up visits.  Similarly, if you’re young fit and well the check-up intervals may be longer

Regular check-ups with your GP are an essential part of preventive healthcare. Prevention is better than cure.  Ask questions of your GP, who have a wealth of knowledge to detect and manage health issues early, potentially preventing more severe conditions. So, just like your car where you have booked in your service, ensure we schedule a check-up with your GP.
