Mark the Date Hervey Bay Changed
1 min read

On the historic date of 26th July 2023, Hervey Bay experienced a monumental transformation as 8 courageous councillors voted in favor of the City Centre Community Hub—a groundbreaking $100 million infrastructure project. This decision marked the most significant development by the Council in 18 years, since the expansion of the airport to accommodate jets and direct flights to Sydney.

The success of the project was a result of collaborative efforts from various individuals and groups. Alongside the supportive councillors, the Council's senior staff played a pivotal role, believing wholeheartedly in the project's vision. Dedicated consultants contributed their expertise over the years, and business and community organizations provided unwavering support.

Federal Member Keith Pitt's contribution cannot be overlooked; securing a critical $40 million Federal Grant was the key to realizing the Community Hub.

Discussion about the City Centre Community Hub dates back to 1995 when a tourism strategy emphasized the need for a stronger city center to establish a distinct local identity. However, financial constraints, political interference, and fear of electoral repercussions delayed its implementation.

The future looks promising, with the Community Hub projected to bring numerous economic benefits to Hervey Bay and its central business district. Increased foot traffic, job creation, enhanced property values, cultural events, improved infrastructure, and more investment and business opportunities are among the anticipated advantages.

The project represents a transformative and long-overdue endeavor for Hervey Bay, highlighting the contrast between the past's disjointed CBD and the vision of a thriving future.

Signs of progress have already emerged, with Council exploring the repurposing of the old Pialba Hotel site for tourism and conference spaces. Like iconic buildings that withstand time, the City Centre Community Hub is poised to become a cherished centerpiece for generations to come.

Despite naysayers and critics, the overwhelming support and long-term benefits of the City Centre Community Hub will prove their reservations unfounded. This visionary project stands as a testament to determination, collaboration, and foresight, heralding a new era of prosperity for Hervey Bay.
