MYOSITIS Association Australia (MAA) is holding its 20th anniversary charity event this year with a Hervey Bay event.
The Sapphire Apartments in the Bay Club will have a gathering on Friday 26th May from 9:30am to 2pm for all residents and their guests are invited to attend.
Nationwide, Myositis patients and their families are recognizing May as International Myositis Awareness Month. This is a time to come together for patients and carers battling this disease, as well as an opportunity to educate the public on this group of extremely rare conditions.
Unless you have a friend or relative with one of the forms of Myositis, you’ve never likely heard of it.
Myositis is the general term used to describe inflammation of the muscles. There are a number of forms of Myositis. The majority of people suffer from Inclusion Body Myositis for which there is no cure or treatment.
Myositis causes weakness and loss of muscle that over time it has a direct major impact on mobility and dangerous falls are frequent. Other impacts are the uncertain future, daily living frustrations, access to support and impact upon family and carers. These issues can often affect mental health and relationships.
“Many people suffer with Myositis alone, for years, before finding other patients they can relate to. If we can tell our story and spread the word to help or encourage other patients, then it’s worth the effort,” says Anita Chalmers who was awarded an OAM in 2018 for her volunteer work with Myositis in the community and with the Myositis Association.
Tickets are available for $25 that includes morning tea and lunch. Entertainment will be provided by Jim and the Tonics Quartet.
