ROSE Overton-Locke and her mother Jasmine Overton are on the path to achieving their joint goal of running their own beauty salon together, with the duo both on track to complete a Certificate III in Nail Technology at TAFE Queensland’s Hervey Bay campus.
For 16-year-old Rose, a career in the beauty industry was on the cards for as long as she can remember.
“When I was much younger, I used to play with my mum’s makeup and get dressed up,” Rose recalls.
“Then I started getting my own makeup – that’s when my passion really started to take off. I just love the fact that you can express yourself in any way you like.”
Keen to kick-start her career, Rose enrolled in a Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics through TAFE at School, before transitioning into a Certificate III in Beauty Services, which she completed in 2023.
Witnessing her daughter thrive in the hands-on learning environment, Jasmine said she felt inspired to follow suit and see what all the fuss was about by undertaking study of her own.
“Seeing her passion and dedication sparked my own interest, leading me to enrol to study a Certificate II in Salon Assistant,” Jasmine said.
“It’s been a lot of fun to learn new skills and upskill – I’m in my 40's and I realised that it doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s never too late to learn something new and take a different path.”
It was during this time the pair decided to take their tandem study journey a step further and enrol in a Certificate III in Nail Technology together at TAFE Queensland’s Hervey Bay campus.
“I find studying with Rose fun – I get to spend lots of time with her before she leaves home and we also help each other along the way and motivate each other.”
“I feel the same,” Rose adds, “I like hanging out with Mum. She’s not a strict mum, she’s a cool mum, and it’s great to have this quality time.”
Both Jasmine and Rose said it’s an experience they are glad to have had, with the facilities, teachers and practical nature of the course boosting their confidence and preparing them for their next step in the industry.
The pair are set to graduate in July, and are looking forward to continuing their journey in the industry side-by-side, putting their newfound skills to use by building their own business.
