Hervey Bay really does have Angels

JOSIE and Trish have been fortunate, like most in the community, to never experience homelessness and that feeling of not belonging.

Yet, their hearts were broken nearly four years ago when they met many in our community who don’t have the luxury of a home and are struggling to find food on a regular basis.

These ladies have devoted themselves since then to make life a “little more comfortable” in a small way by providing food and living supplies that they have available through donations.

The dedicated minds behind J&T Supporting Homeless, have become beacons of hope for the homeless community during a mounting housing crisis and a lack of affordable options in Hervey Bay.

They have witnessed the impact of increasing cost-of-living expenses and affordability of housing, homelessness has sadly become a harsh reality for more people in the Bay than ever before.

Through J&T Supporting Homeless, they offer a lifeline with important meals that ensures less go hungry in the community.

They regularly help over 100 people each week. “Our record has been 80 people in two days” says Josie.

Josie and Trish rely on donations to distribute essential items and see the gratitude of helping with hygiene products for the well-being and dignity of those experiencing homelessness.

Their continued support from organisations such as Bendigo Bank, Hervey Bay Disability Assistance and also Hervey Bay RSL who recently purchased a van to help the ladies with transportation.

“The public have been fantastic” says Josie.

An important part of their fundraising has been the recycling of bottles and cans that now includes wine and spirit bottles.

People can drop the recycle items off to their bin which is located at 25, Honiton Street Torquay.

What sets Josie and Trish apart is their personal touch. They take the time to listen to the stories and struggles of homeless individuals, offering a compassionate ear, forging friendships, providing much needed emotional support and a sense of belonging.

The ladies work encourages unity in the community, inspiring others to get involved and shared responsibility in the crisis of homelessness. Josie speaks highly of the many initiatives that have been incorporated into Hervey Bay including sleepbus and The Lounge facility at Truro street.

“These have made such a difference to so many lives. Getting a good night’s sleep and having an environment that brings people together with common struggles is so good for their mental health as well as relieving some of their living challenges”, says Josie.
