The LiveWell Hervey Bay podcast recently sat down Ali Bennett, founder and owner of Allied Fitness.
The focus of this podcast was to explore the methodology about why it's important for us to exercise and to keep moving to be able to live the best life that we want to live and stay healthy.
Ali, explained the philosophy of movement and why it’s important for us to move.
‘I always say to most people, the less you do, the less you do. For example, when you wake up, pick up your phone and then you lie on the couch or you turn your TV on and you live a stagnant lifestyle, you then will continue that lifestyle for the rest of the day’ Ali said.
‘It’s very hard to push yourself but, the more you move the more you want to move as the endorphins are raised and the better you feel the more you want to do’.
‘When we want to make change it's a fear of stepping away from our comfort routine into a new routine, which is largely the contributing factor why we don't end up doing it’.
‘Being comfortable feels easy and being comfortable is easy’.
‘As soon as you step outside of your comfort zone, you're walking into a place of the unknown and so that's not always a great feeling, it’s is scary, but that's where you grow’.
Most people start the gym in the New Year and they go hard, then they dwindle to three days, two days, one day and then eventually we don’t see them again.
‘Rather than doing everything at a thousand percent maybe creating a program where we can routinely train and we eat well during the week. Slowly decrease alcohol so that if we're not doing it perfectly, we don't have to fail’.
‘Moderation and sustainability are key’.
‘Everyone is too busy. We're all too busy until we don't have the health to be busy anymore’.
‘While we put everyone else first, we put our kids first, our friendships first, our work first and put all our energy into everything else, we are letting our own health subside until we can't do that any longer.”
‘Well, health is wealth and I think it's difficult sometimes when you're in the grind, particularly if you're both working, you've got young kids and all the rest’.
‘It’s too hard to find the time to be able to go out and train or whatever there are things that people can do at home at night while they're watching tv, grab some dumbbells, do some squats, it all counts’.
‘If you are really time poor walk. Walk from your car to your workplace park further away. You don't have to park at the entrance of Woolies, park further away’.
‘Push your trolley to the car or carry your bags, that can be your weight training’.
‘But we do need to rest as well’.
‘Being a society where we go go go all the time, we feel guilty about sitting still but when we are resting, we can stretch and be mindful also’.
‘If you are coming to Allied Fitness for the first time, yes we are a high intensity gym but within my space, it's filled with every different fitness level’.
‘Everyone is working for themselves, so they're not really worried about the people around you’.
‘We usually start new members with strength training’.
‘You are learning the technique first. It’s slower pace and helps teach your form, which will prevent injury’.
‘Starting with strength training, building that comfortability with a barbell and just feeling like you can do the movements’.
‘As you grow in knowledge, then we add the metcons or the cardiovascular classes’.
‘As we get older, we lose muscle mass a lot easier and that then slows down your metabolism’.
‘We need to keep using the muscle to keep it or build it.’.
‘Nutrition is everything. It's 80% nutrition 20% exercise, so if you are exercising all day and then going to the bakery or KFC to replenish your body. You are not eating what your body needs to have the desired outcome’.
‘Eat clean food, try and step away from packaged food. Anything that's packaged has got preservatives’.
‘Fruit, salad, veggies, have that with every meal. We want protein with every meal. You could have eggs, chicken, tuna, meat, Yo-pro yogurt, and trying to eat protein throughout the day.’
