Women taking mental health in their stride
2 min read

CONVERSATIONS have known to be strong with ladies and the ability to do more than one activity at once is not uncommon ground for the resilient women of our communities.

Hervey Bay has launched a vibrant group of women who understand the value of exercise and conversations that benefit their mental health.

The inception of Women’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay sprouted from a conversation at a Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce breakfast last year. During the discussion, the idea of creating a space for women to walk, talk, and support each other was embraced by some attendees and launched a regular group within weeks.

Alicia Wade was amongst the breakfast and instantly raised her hand to be involved and lead the inception of what has become a very popular group.

“We started with the conversation in November and within a month I set up the walk & talk with over 500 keen to join and 60 coming to the launch”, says Alicia.

“We now have 700 members in our private group and getting close to 1000 on the page. Which is amazing growth and continues to grow weekly. It’s been phenomenal.”

The launch of the group was also inspired by the success of Men’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay who were more than happy to share their insights and guidance, while also gaining support from Fraser Coast Mates that encourages mental health initiatives in the local community.

Alicia glows about the positive impact on mental health the group has developed and is evident as each individual sees improvements in various aspects.

It’s universally recognised that regular walks contribute to enhanced fitness levels, significant weight loss, boosted confidence, and the courage to prioritise self-care.

“There are too many stories ……... however, there are hundreds of new people moving to Hervey Bay, an echo I hear and see weekly. Many want to make new friends and not feel so lonely. Seeing the friendships built and then catch ups out of the walks warms the teams heart”, say Alicia.

The group has so many wonderful individual stories.

Rebecca (Bec) “I joined the group to meet new people and to improve my mental health. I enjoy walking with a group of friendly, supportive women and I always leave with a smile on my face”

Kate “Being part of the group has given me a new inspiration and purpose in life. I’ve met many beautiful ladies and it’s helped me with my anxiety and low self-esteem.”

Women’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay meet twice a week at the All Abilities Park near the Adventure Side Car park – Monday evenings 5:15pm and Thursday mornings 5:30pm.
