Careers Expo helps students make informed decisions

Hervey Bay State High School held their annual Careers Expo earlier this month, providing guidance and information in relation to career options and opportunities for their students.

Transitioning from school to work can be a daunting time for our youth, and the expo provided an opportunity to explore a wide range of academic and career opportunities, to help them discover the right future path.

‘We had as many as 800 students come through the Careers Expo. It is primarily targeted for our year 10 students, of which there are 260. They are the ones who are about to complete their SET-plan, which entails choosing their pathway for years 11 and 12’ Deputy Principal Terri Weatherley said.

Many of the exhibitors at the Careers Expo were local organisations, with a view to creating opportunities for our youth to stay in our region post school.

‘Pathways to employment after high school are vital for students' future success. They offer diverse opportunities, be it further study, vocational training, or apprenticeships, aligning with individual interests and skills. These pathways empower students to make informed career choices, bridge the gap between education and industry, and foster a skilled workforce’.

‘We have fabulous students who would be an asset to any local business and programs like the expo allow those students to talk to real local employers about how they can improve their prospects of employability’.

‘We host a number of agencies, including apprenticeship organisations, who assist students with the correct pathway for securing apprenticeships and traineeships’.

More than forty exhibitors took part in the Careers Expo this year, the third year of the event, and planning is already well underway for 2024.
