Building resilience: Urangan boys shine
2 min read

THIRTEEN boys from Urangan State High School have proudly completed the 10-week JTYouGotThis program, delivered by the JT Academy with expert guidance from Bernie Williams, Summer Knight, and Natalia Unsworth.

This early intervention program, proudly supported by Tanya Stevenson and her dedicated team at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, focuses on building resilience, self-confidence, and self-belief among young people.

Its main goal is to help participants strengthen their internal resilience, develop a positive identity, and empower them to make well-informed and constructive life choices.

Over the course of the 10 weeks, the students engaged in a variety of activities designed to help them explore their personal strengths and build new skills.

They learned how to approach challenges in a positive and proactive way, gaining valuable strategies to navigate everyday obstacles with confidence.

The practical and supportive nature of the program enabled the boys to recognise their own potential while developing decision-making skills aligned with their values and long-term goals.

The success of the program is thanks in large part to the ongoing support from the Fraser Coast community.

The JT Academy has been able to run this initiative not only at Urangan State High School but also at Hervey Bay State High School over the past year, with plans to continue delivering the program well into 2026.

This community partnership has been crucial in extending the program’s reach, ensuring more young people benefit from its positive impact across the region.

Throughout the program, the boys demonstrated the JT Academy’s core values of self-belief, confidence, and courage.

They showed commitment by setting and working toward short-term goals and developed strong bonds with their peers.

Together, they created a safe and supportive space that fostered new friendships and positive influence — a true reflection of the program’s powerful effect.

As they celebrated their graduation, the boys marked not only the completion of the program but also the start of a new chapter.

Equipped with resilience, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of self, they are now prepared to face future challenges with confidence.

Their journey stands as a compelling example of the difference early intervention and community-backed programs can make in shaping the lives of young people.
