THROUGHOUT October, Shane Bradbury joined a nationwide community of riders, all united by a shared mission to eradicate childhood cancer and safeguard the futures of our littlest heroes.
With each hill he conquered and every kilometre he pedalled, he paid tribute to the lives lost and showed unwavering support for the courageous children who continue their battle for survival.
The objective was straightforward yet significant – to finance groundbreaking research and to uncover the cures for all forms of childhood cancer.
“This marks my second year participating in the ‘Great Cycle Challenge’ on behalf of the Children’s Medical Research Institute. To be honest, I never envisioned myself as a cyclist, but this initiative has drawn me in. Some of the Men’s Walk and Talk comrades are avid cyclists, and they inspired me to take up the cause,” Shane said.
“They must have caught me in a vulnerable moment because I purchased a bicycle and began this journey. I found immediate enjoyment in it,” he added.
“Last year, I managed to raise a little over $4,700, and as a part of our Men’s Walk and Talk group, we collectively raised just over $9,000.”
“Last year, I pedalled just over 500 kilometres, and this time around, I set a personal goal to exceed 900 kilometres.”
“Setting a daily target of 30 kilometres was an effective strategy, enabling me to track my progress systematically. The app was an invaluable tool in keeping me on course. With the days growing longer and the sun gracing us earlier, it’s truly a splendid time to be out and about.”
For Shane, this challenge fused his drive for fitness with a commitment to hold himself accountable for regular exercise.
“Though this challenge is all about raising funds for kids, I can’t help but think of my own childhood. My father succumbed to cancer when I was in high school, and his memory is always with me when opportunities to support causes like this arise.”
“This year’s ride brought together over 6,500 individuals who collectively raised well over $3 million and covered nearly 700,000 kilometres. Our united efforts are not only making a difference but also providing hope for a brighter future for children facing the battle of their lives.”
