A Guide to a Healthy Festive Season

CHRISTMAS and New Year is around the corner.  This is a time for excitement and celebration. However, we do need to make conscious and healthy choices to ensure we stay well moving into 2024.

Food and Nutrition

The tempting holiday treats, the delicious flavours and the abundance of food. Be mindful of how we eat, take time to enjoy each bite, and savour the festive dishes with awareness. This approach can prevent overeating and promote better digestion.

Meals during this period are often quite rich and indulgent. Foods may be quite high in sugar, salt and fats. Consider the number of serves of pudding, the number of chocolates and slices of ham.  Make an effort to maintain a balanced diet. Include a variety of options such as fruits, vegetables and salads.

Hydration and Alcohol

Beers, wine, bubbles and cocktails often form part of the holiday celebrations.

Be mindful that excessive drinking can lead to negative health effects. There is a large choice of low and no alcohol drinks available, so consider alternating between alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages.

As we move into the warmer months, it’s also easy to forget about hydration. Make it a point to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration not only supports overall health, but can also help control your appetite and prevent overeating.

Physical Activity

Whilst this is the holiday season, remember to continue your exercise. Incorporate exercise into your plans, whether it’s a family walk after a meal, dancing at gatherings or participating in holiday-themed workouts.

Stress and Sleep

This is a time that will bring often bring mixed emotions ranging from joy, stress and overwhelm. Prioritising your mental health is key to fully enjoying the festive season. Practicing selfcare such as deep breathing, meditation, or spending time doing activities you enjoy.

Remember, it is okay to say “no”.

Make sleep a priority by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Quality sleep is crucial for overall health and can help you manage stress during the busy festive season.

Support those around you who may be having a difficult period. Remember a balanced approach to festivities ensures a healthier and happier you.
